Great shot, Amy! I, too, watch two families of house wrens this summer right outside our bedroom window. Just this past week, I watched momma wren stuff a grasshopper into the mouth of one of the young babies. I truly thought the baby was going to gag to death, that bug was so big! F/V

Amy Porter replied:

Thanks so much for your great comment and fave, Terri! I agree with your comment about the size of the bugs - simply amazing!

Artist's Description

This is a House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) calling to its young in the nest, while also holding a grasshopper. Watching them daily, the routine includes catching an insect, then using a shrub near the nest, in this case a Viburnum, as a retreat from which to call to the babies before feeding them. Unlike the wrens' operatic mating songs of Spring, the feeding call is raspy and non-melodic. Even so, the wrens left as soon as the babies fledged and I miss hearing that raspy sound.
