Artist's Description

Barred owls (Strix varia) are fairly common in New England forests. They put on a wonderful concert as they hoot back and forth to each other at night. Barred owls fly silently through the woods in search of rodents, and are well camouflaged. We have two living in the woods next to our house; we hear them all the time, but rarely get to see them.

This particular owl was injured and rehabilitated by a wonderful sanctuary in Killingworth, CT called, "A Place Called Hope." The rescued birds that can be returned back into the wild are released, while those with permanent disabilities live at the sanctuary.
