This is one of two juvenile Cooper's Hawks (Accipiter cooperii) that fledged recently and have taken up residence in the trees around our house in Connecticut. It's been quite exciting, although I don't like the thought of two additional hawks hunting at our bird feeders. The young hawks call out all day long, as this one is doing in this photograph. They make clumsy, failed attempts at catching squirrels and birds, and the much smaller barn swallows take turns chasing and pecking them as they fly. When one of the much-awaited parents brings them a meal, they both fly over to "their tree" to eat.
The yellow eyes and teardrop shaped streaks on this bird's breast are characteristic of a juvenile Cooper's Hawk.
This photograph tied for third place in the "New Listings" contest on FAA in August 2017. Many thanks to all those who voted!
