Description

The female Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) does most of the nest building. This poor girl has been at it all week! She flies down to the ground, picks up a mouthful of dried grass, and flies back up to the nest... over and over, until she's ready for the soft, finishing touches.

This photograph tied for first place in the FAA contest, "Your Latest Work," in June 2017. Many thanks to all those who voted!

Beautiful stop action shot! Do you know that hummingbirds will also use spider web material to build their nests?!

Many thanks for your great comment and fave, Marie! I have noticed the hummingbirds with spider web strands on their beaks, but I thought they had been picking insects out of the webs! Learn something new every day! :-)
