Description

Each year, in late August through early October, hundreds of thousands of tree swallows participate in a wonderful ritual. They come in mass at sunset to roost in the tall reeds on Goose Island in the Connecticut River. As the swarm increases, the swallows dip and turn in a coordinated winged ballet. At times, it looks like a funnel cloud. Then all at once, they descend and vanish into to the reeds. A photograph cannot capture the magic of watching this ritual; it is truly an awe-inspiring feat of nature.
