Description
This is a male Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) photographed in Connecticut in September. The males have the red patch on the back of their heads.
These cute little woodpeckers use their tongue to drink nectar from our hummingbird feeders. This summer, they have also been at the finch feeder daily, and don't resort to eating the black oil sunflower seeds until they've emptied the thistle feed from the finch feeder. As the weather cools and the suet feeders reappear, the woodpeckers will most likely prefer suet over all else.

Many thanks, William, for featuring this image in your wonderful group, "Wild Birds of the World." I also appreciate your great comments! It seems like I've waited years to finally capture one of these woodpeckers on a tree trunk with enough morning light making its way through the leaves to illuminate the bird.
