Artist's Description

The Eastern Phoebes (Sayornis phoebe) are doing their part to help control the gypsy moth population. During peak infestation in Connecticut this summer, gypsy moth caterpillars ate almost all of the leaves off of many of the trees in our area. Thanks to the hungry birds that feed on the caterpillars and moths (and no insecticides to harm the birds), the trees did recover and grew new leaves.

Eastern phoebes grow yellow breast feathers in Autumn, and this fellow is showing off his (or hers).
