Description
As Autumn approaches in Connecticut, the house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) are transitioning from catching summer bugs to eating Fall berries. I can't tell if this is one of the wrens that hatched in a nest on our front porch this past summer, but it's exciting to think it might be.
The shrub in this photograph is a Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia), which is a non-native, thorny, and invasive species. There are a lot of reasons why someone would not want these shrubs in their yard. However, they are covered with berries each Fall, and attract/feed a wide variety of birds and small animals. In the Middle East, these berries are ground into a powder that is used to treat Rheumatoid arthritis.
