Description
This female Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) was photographed as she was headed out to lay her eggs on a rainy June morning in Northeastern Connecticut. A long lens was used so as not to disturb her. Wood turtles are a Threatened species, so extreme caution must be use not to bother them or disrupt their egg laying. Although these turtles may be found throughout Connecticut, they are becoming quite rare due to the complexity of their habitat requirement.
Of interest is that this turtle’s right front foot is missing its toes. It’s possible that they were bitten off. She seemed to have healed and was using the foot without difficulty.
