Artist's Description

This is a female Downy Woodpecker (Picoides pubescens) on a January afternoon in Connecticut, USA. She is perched in an oak tree, waiting for a turn at the bird feeder. We have quite a few of these small woodpeckers, who prefer shelled sunflower seeds and suet in winter when there are no bugs available.
