Description
This photograph won third place in the "Dragonflies Color Photography" contest on FAA in June 2016, as well as second place in the "Heart Images" contest on FAA, July 2013. Many thanks to all those who voted!
These little damsel flies are tiny! Only about an inch long and barely thicker than a sewing needle (hence their old nickname "Darning Needle"), getting both flies in focus was quite a challenge.

Excellent! @Jeff, that is a myth about the 24 hour lifespan. They can live up to 4 years as a nymph shedding coats until they mature and emerge from the water. Then they can live up to 6 months as an adult. :)
Amy Porter replied:
Thanks very much, John! It's good to know they live longer. I've noticed we have a lot fewer damsels and dragonflies at our pond this year, so I hope we still have a lot of nymphs who will mature and fly around next year.

Great "action" shot here Amy! This is a difficulty "10" shot since dragonflies only live for 24 hours. You captured the moment perfectly! F/L/V/F, ~Jeff at JSJ Photography
