This female Ruby-Throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is one of the last hummers still here in our yard in Connecticut at the end of the summer. The males and most of the other females have already left on their migration South for the winter. In this image, the light shining on and through the fuchsia plant created a dappled effect that cast a spotlight on the bird’s head.
I purchased my first SLR, a 1970 Nikon FTN, when I was in High School. I studied both science and art in college, and although I pursued science and technology management as a career, artwork has remained a driving passion for me. Nature photography allows me to combine a love for nature, biology, and art. I'm very fortunate to live in a rural area where I can photograph horses, gardens, and wildlife. About 19 years ago, I converted to digital, and now use a Nikon D500.
