Description
Each year, the barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) return to our barn in Connecticut to raise a new brood of fledglings. They make mud nests in the rafters of the barn, and fly in and out all summer catching flying insects to feed their young. We have very few mosquitoes here, thanks to these little birds eating them on the wing.
In the subdued light inside the barn, they appear to be rust colored, but when the bright sunlight hits their feathers just right, they look to be a deep blue color.
