Description
This is a Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) photographed in Connecticut on a cool November morning. In addition to the bright red patch on the back of their heads, flickers have bright yellow feathers under their wings which make them easy to identify while flying.
These woodpeckers seem to do most of their "pecking" on the ground. They can often be found pecking in the ground for grubs on our pasture, hence the dirt on this one's beak. They also love suet in winter, when the ground is frozen and/or snow covered.
