Description

This is a Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) who has been lured from the underbrush by some irresistible suet. With winter having finally arrived in Connecticut, even the shy birds are looking for food at the bird feeders. Flickers are cousins to the smaller and more frequently seen downy and red-bellied woodpeckers.

A really wonderful photo, and what a beautiful bird! What is the bird?

Thanks so much for your great comments, Plum! This bird is a Northern Flicker, a member of the woodpecker family. They are a medium sized bird that is generally seen in shrubs low to the ground. The snow cover has brought them out in the open, where this one has been feeding on a suet block.
