Description
This cute face belongs to a barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) fledgling, just a day after leaving the nest. The parents were busy with their summer marathon of catching flying insects to feed to their four hungry babies, doing a remarkable job of making sure everyone got a fair share.
I imagined that all were happy to be perched on our deck chairs, instead of being cramped in a tiny nest in the barn. The wonderful spectacle lasted only a few hours before the family moved on. All in all, it's pretty amazing that only a few weeks ago, the baby in this photograph was a tiny, featherless hatchling.
